Nature PEI has launched a new project to raise awareness about species which are currently at risk of extinction on PEI.

Definitions

  • Endangered: a wildlife species that is facing imminent extirpation or extinction

  • Threatened: a wildlife species that is likely to become an Endangered species if nothing is done to reverse the factors leading to its extirpation or extinction

  • Special Concern: a wildlife species that may become a Threatened or an Endangered species because of a combination of biological characteristics and identified threats

  • Extirpated: a wildlife species that no longer exists in the wild in PEI, but exists elsewhere in the wild

  • Extinct: a wildlife species that no longer exists

  • The species listed on these pages have been declared Endangered, Threatened or of Special Concern by the Species at Risk Act (SARA). This list is regularly updated and altered, but is accurate as of summer 2023. 

  • The status of many species on PEI is currently under review by SARA.

  • If you observe any of these species on PEI, please upload your sighting with pictures to the community science observation app, iNaturalist.
