The November 3rd Nature PEI meeting will feature a presentation by former provincial biologist and Nature PEI past president Rosemary Curley on Butterflies of PEI.
The Maritimes Butterfly Atlas project (2010-2015) was the first comprehensive and systematic survey of butterflies in the region, mapping each species on PEI and throughout the Maritimes. Results were recently combined with butterflies of Maine into the book, Butterflies of Maine and the Canadian Maritime Provinces.
John MacGregor, writing about PEI in 1828, had noted, “The principal insects are Butterflies, of which there are a number of beautiful varieties.” Now, some 60 odd species can be counted for the Province.
The PEI coordinator for the Maritimes Butterfly Atlas, Rosemary Curley, will take you through that list and expose that beauty through the photos of many local naturalists.
The meeting will start with announcements and sightings, and feature a short raffle break, before the program starts about 8PM. Nature PEI meetings are free and all ages are welcome, and will be livestreamed at the Facebook page.
The next public meeting will be December 1st. For more information, see the Facebook page or the website at https://naturepei.ca/
Please note:
November Nature PEI Meeting was to have Dr. Ed MacDonald on Museums, but due to a scheduling conflict, that talk will be in Winter or Spring 2027.
