Despite stark declines in populations of native brook trout and Atlantic salmon, recent decades have been marked by the establishment of non-native rainbow trout on at least 25 rivers on PEI. The Natural History Society of PEI has invited guest speaker Scott Roloson to explain highlights of his research into this topic during their January meeting. Roloson expresses that this research investigates the ecology of rainbow trout on PEI. There is concern that rainbow trout from PEI are invading other rivers across the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence.  Roloson is using acoustic telemetry to determine the migratory behavior of sea-going (steelhead) rainbow trout.  His study also investigates whether the hardiness of rainbow trout is lending them a competitive advantage over the native salmon and trout in degraded habitat conditions. Information gathered throughout his research will benefit those working to conserve native salmon and trout populations.
